The Arts Block

IMPULSE ENSEMBLE: Tony Vacca, Derrik Jordan, Jim Matus - 8PM

289 Main Street
Greenfield Massachusetts USA (413) 774-0150 [map]
Price: $10

"An outstanding mix of composed pieces and accessible improvisation. Impulse Ensemble's 'Initiation' is a remarkable album of cross-cultural musical wizardry."(Angel Romero from World Music Central)

It was really bold to buy two buildings in downtown Greenfield, and triple-bold to dedicate them to creating a support system for music, art, and the community.

It's called THE ARTS BLOCK, and it's one of our favorite venues. It's part cool cafe and part small concert hall. It seats well over 200 and the vibe is all about up-close-and-personal.

Ed Wierzbowski is putting his arts-vision to the test, which is what we musicians do every time we perform or make another CD. It's an act of faith..so we hope you'll join us for this concert. For a preview of IMPULSE,  just click on the homepage photo at our site: www.impulseensemble.com. PS: TURN IT UP!

If you can't make it to the gig, cool...help us out...buy a ticket anyway, or just pass on this invitation to someone who digs the music.

A red-hot way-cool free-flow fusion of World Music, Jazz and Spoken Word.

Tony Vacca: balafon, gongs, percussion, spoken word. Jim Matus: electric laoutar, vocals. Derrik Jordan: electric violin, percussion, vocals.

Tony Vacca, Jim Matus and Derrik Jordan are three musicians and composers with some unlikely common ground. They share a special interest in the converging traditions and innovations that are constantly redefining what it is to be an American musician at this point in time.

They are passionate and mesmerizing performers on their respective instruments, equally at home in a written composition or in a totally free-form improvisation. They have each produced many recordings of their own music, and have traveled far and wide in pursuit of their visions. In creating Impulse Ensemble they are combining forces to make some truly extraordinary music.

Sweeney Concert Hall in Sage Hall at Smith College

Fusion Nomads - 4pm-7pm

144 Green St
Northampton Massachusetts 01060
US (413) 585-2162 [map]
Price: FREEhttp://impulseensemble.com/h

The Smith College Music Department presents Fusion Nomads, a free concert of music spanning genres and continents, featuring artists including Hassan Hakmoun, The Impulse Ensemble, and Senegalese hip-hop group Gokh-Bi System. Starts at 4 p.m.

Morocco-born performer Hassan Hakmoun, is a staple of New York’s rock, jazz, and fusion scenes for his “spiritually charged voice and playing.” His driving, rhythmic music and his instrument, the sintir (a long-necked African bass lute) are rooted in Gnawa, a Moroccan ceremony of spiritual release. Hakmoun’s trance-like music is deeply felt, and he brings a tradition of healing to renderings of jazz, pop, and classical Arabic music.

Impulse Ensemble features Jim Matus (electric laoutar and vocals), Derrik Jordan (electric violin, vocals, and percussion), and Tony Vacca (balafon, gongs, percussion and Spoken Word). They describe their work as a “red-hot way-cool free-flow fusion of World Music, Jazz and Spoken Word” and “share a special interest in the converging traditions and innovations that are constantly redefining what it is to be an American musician at this point in time.”

Members of Gokh-Bi System, a Senegalese hip-hop group, are childhood friends from the Dakar, Senegal hood of Pikine Guinaw Rail–literally “the other side of the tracks.” Gokh-Bi System reunites rap with its ancient West African ancestors in a style dubbed “ancient meets urban.” A distinctive component of GBS’s authentic sound is the ekonting, an ancient instrument once used to calm social unrest played by Sana. Gokh-Bi’s positive message, inspired by rap greats from The Last Poets to Chuck D, transform the group's sound into an uplifting yet hard-hitting African homecoming for hip hop.

Fusion Nomads presents an eclectic combination of world music and international artists. The concert is free and open to the public.

Black Moon Music Lounge

Impulse Ensemble - 9pm-midnight

37 State Street
Belchertown Massachusetts 01007
US 413-323-0013 [map]
Price: $10

The Black Moon Music Lounge is one of those special clubs that musicians tend to love to play at. It's small enough that there is no "bad" seat from which to hear and see the music being made. It has an inviting funkyness about it with colored mini-lights and bold colors. So if you care about the environment in which you listen to music, this would be a good choice.
